Handling a black long-spine urchin?

I am acclimating one as we speak using the method where I float the bag and gradually mix tank water into the bag. What is the best way to get it out of the bag and into my QT without getting the water from the bag into the QT? Can I grab a few of the spines with a pair of pliers and lift it out of the bag?

You can not grab anything on a long spined urchin. The spines will break

I use a pitcher and dump the water down the drain then slide the live stock into the tank.
