So currently getting ready to upgrade to a 55 gallon tank and was wondering if hang on the back filters would do the job in place if canister or sump. If so I’d love to hear what kind would get the job done. Thanks in advance for any advice

I use an aquaclear 110 HOB on my 65g and I have no sump.

I use a Aquaclear 70 on my 75g mixed reef. I put gfo, carbon, and a pad in it. For nitrate and phosphate control you are better off with a hob skimmer or hob fuge with a good light or both. I use a Aquamaxx 1.5 skimmer and the CPR medium hob fuge. Make sure you buy a better light for the fuge though. If you dont want all the ugly hob stuff then it's more freq and higher % wc.

Your tank is amazing man. What about power heads? And a good light. I wouldn’t say I’m on a budget or anything but you know lol

Aquaclear and Seachem Tidal are both excellent hang ons.

All filters with sponges and/or ceramic filter media are detritus traps. With a hang on it's easy to give them a weekly quick clean and your water quality will be better as a result.
