just saw a hang on glass algae scrubber, referred to as a HOG on marine Depot. Has anyone ever used one and if so did it do a good job? This is the first I’ve seen one and thinking it may be a good investment.

Yes they work, I did a diy knock off of that same design; took the nitrates and phosphate down to minimal. I used it on a bc29, it was unsitely and way too high maintenance. I use an algae scrubber on that same tank now and am much happier, just as efficient and maintenance is minimal.

The HOG was too high maintenance?

Yes, the process of removing the unit and cleaning the screen was a pita. They are also designed to mostly goes on a glass wall inside the display, so I didn't care for that either. I guess it could be used in sump. How big is your tank and how is it laid out; is it an AIO, a sump, etc. I like running algae reactors better, dollar for dollar an algae scrubber will perform much better

I have a 45 gal aio so I was thinking of putting it in the back where it wouldn’t be visible but like you said it would probably be a pita to work on
