I have been looking into making my tank bigger.. I have been looking for a tank i like for a while now with no luck... I am starting to look into just putting a Hang on the Back over flow... Anyone that has used one before that disliked it for any reason let me hear it. Also if anyone has one they recommend please link it.

I used a lifereef overflow for a year or so and it worked. But I always had the thought in my mind that it would lose syphon one day and flood my living room. I then bought a reef ready tank. I'm setting up a frag tank soon and I'm going to drill it

I have an eshopps 1000 and it’s never lost siphon in three months so far

I ran one of these back in 2004. With how things are today. I would 100% not run a hang on the back over flow. Either pay someone to drill a tank for you. Or get one already drilled. Back in the day. Every time the power went off or I shut off the return pump to do maintenance, I would have to manually get the siphon going again. Now that was over a decade ago. I'll never recommend one to anyone.

HOB’s are perfectly fine.. when set up properly they will not lose syphon and will automatically restart on a power outage, IMO eshopps PF series are one of the best ones currently on the market.. I have never drilled a tank in 3+ decades of reefing;)

I'm not a big fan of hang on overflows. But I am currently using one on a temporary setup. As a long term solution, I would steer away from them.

That being said, I never lose a prime. I can turn off my return pump and flow starts without issue when I turn it back on. The trick is to make sure that when water flows from the tank into the internal portion of the overflow, the level doesn't go below the tube connecting the inside portion of the overflow to the outside portion.

Going on 4 years using an eshopps pf800 with no issues. Never lost a siphon and starts right up again in the event of a power loss or after a WC, never had bubbles collect in the U-tube over time. If the siphon was ever to stop no chance of flooding because the return section would run dry before overflowing the tank.
The only drawback is aesthetically the tank doesn't look nice with it hanging off the back, it needs to be removed a few times a year for cleaning, and out of the box they are noisy but that can be corrected with a diy Stockman standpipe (instructions on youtube), the tank is next to where I watch TV and I don't hear the tank at all. They get a bad rap but if set up correctly there should never be any problems.
