Hello everyone, so for the past couple months I have been using a pretty cheap Instant Oceans hang on skimmer and was wanting to upgrade to a better one. Was wondering if anyone had any experience with other hang ons or if anyone had one they really liked? Thanks for any advice in advance!

Hard to recommend only because I've not used many. I did have a CPR Bak Pak that I had great success with as it relates to a HOB. Again I've only used it so can't say best, worst, etc.

  • Solid build quality
  • Did not use media they provide
  • used on 10 gallon, 29 gallon bio cube, 40 breeder
  • Held heater easy enough giving more space
  • Modified to make lower noise by taking intake line, cut, added pill bottle on either side, added cotton ball to create muffler - DIY - enough examples out there

Easy enough to recommend for you to search and get some additional feedback reviews.

IceCap K1-50 is a good unit

I have an AquaMaxx HOB-1.5 on my 55 gallon and have been very pleased with its performance. An added plus is that it looks great!
I had used HoB 1.5 as well. It was a beast. It is an excellent choice for HoB if you can't have an in-sump (or in-tank) skimmer.

Another vote for the Aquamaxx.
What size tank do you have?
Awesome i think i may go with that one or the Icecap k1-50. and its a 40 breeder

We have an aquamaxx 1.5 on our upstairs 40 breeder. Excellent skimmer.
Wife won’t have sump upstairs, you can probably guess why, lol!
I wasn’t that familiar with HOB skimmers, I have always had in sump or external skimmers in the past. All our other tanks have been in basement and always had sumps.
spent about 2 weeks researching and reading online reviews for HOB skimmer. Aquamaxx came highly rated, solid skimmer all around. I have no regrets and would definitely purchase again.
From what I found online, Aquamaxx 1.5 and reef octopus 1000 were both solid skimmers.
I don’t have any personal experience with reef octo HOB but we do have the aquamaxx, aquamaxx is a great HOB skimmer.
Almost forgot to mention, whatever you purchase, make sure it has an option for a bubble stop. Since you won’t have a sump, micro bubbles are usually an issue. Bubble stop attachment will resolve issues with micro bubbles.

Does it pull dark skim?

Does it pull dark skim?

It’s still new system, only has 2 small clowns and skimmer is still breaking in.
Tank is only about a month old, new setup. Skim is currently more of what I would call an dark army greenish color.
As tank ages, bio load increases and skimmer is done breaking in, I’m sure skim will get darker.
I’ve had same experience on all my tanks over the years, new tank didn’t produce the black nasty skim, that comes as tank matures.
My 210 is now at about the 6-7 month stage, skim on that is basically now jet black.
That system has a reef octo sro 5000 external skimmer, absolute beast of a skimmer.

Awesome! Thanks for the advice!

Yes, it does. You can easily adjust to skim wet or dry. The HoB 1.5 does either one excellently. "Eat Sleep and Reef" made an awesome review on Youtube a couple of years ago. You can judge yourself.

Eat Sleep and Reef on HoB 1.5

Was the skimate dark enough in the video? :)
