@Randy Holmes-Farley

I have a fancy new digital Hanna Brix refractometer at work in my lab. I was reading one of your articles about using them to get a salinity reading in seawater. According to your chart a %brix of 4.4 is pretty close to 35ppt seawater! Here are the specs of my device:

My question is this, is this going to be more accurate than my run of the mill BRS brine refractometer and the cheap 35ppt calibration fluid i currently use? Im in charge of my lab here at work and i can totally borrow this fancy new device from time to time if i want. I can even just bring a water sample into work once a week if i want to... is it worth the extra effort? Thanks!

I have both, and it takes about the same amount of time to use either the digital brix or your typical refractometer. (drop of water, read, rinse, dry) maybe a little more with the brix because you want to make sure it is completely cleaned (trapped water near the metal ring/edges surrounding the lens) or it can possibly throw off future readings. the handheld run of the mill refractometer is simple to clean off.

As for accuracy, I always test with both and they always read the same. Just make sure your equipment is calibrated correctly.
