Hanna Calcium Checker Review

I honestly couldnt say. I would like to think so, but after testing recently I have lost faith in this checker. I tested 3 times in a row a couple days ago, and got 3 very different results.oh:

Yeah i had a bad feeling myself. I tested with my API and Hanna recently. I got very different results, granted it was the first time and the powder was new to me. I feel like the human error is in the powder. Kinda sad cuz my alk tester works like a champ.

The phosphate checker is awesome too, and it has the little powder reagent as well. But at least the readings are steady and right.

This one seems that there are too many oppurtunities to screw something up. The fact that you drop 0.1 ml which is literally only 2 drops, seems to make things even more convenient to screw up. I read on another thread that people were going as far as getting lab grade RO/DI and still getting whack results. some folks can't get it to stop blinking 600. I am sad about this, but I will keep trying here and there with my other tests and maybe after some practice and tweaking it will be okay. But the whole point of a hanna checker is supposed to be the easiness and convenience....oh well, its just another $50 I flushed down the ole saltwater toilet

After the stupid po4 checker from Hanna I will never own another Hanna egg checker ever they never seem to work like advertised wish someone would make that thread a sticky haha

yea.. this CA Checker doesn't seem very easy to use.. nor easy to producing reliable result... I guess I will stick w/ hanna.

Check your raw RO/DI water for calcium. If there is any calcium in it, it can greatly affect the results.

I think that this may be the reason that everyone is getting different results. I don't have a personal RO/DI system and so I get my water from 3 different places, so who knows what the heck is really going on!?

Does a saltwater Calcium test work on RODI water?? To get a proper reading do you need a special test kit for freshwater?? I have never heard of using a Salifert for fresh water Hmmm Seems this tester is not reliable enough to abandon my current way of testing for Ca.

as far as the number of drops, use the tiny tip you had for your salifert kit. you will end up with like 5 drops of tank water instead

It has now been confirmed by Hanna themselves that they screwed up on the type of syringe they included with this test kit. they are now advising going to a pharmacy and getting diabetic syringes in order to drop the right amount of saltwater into the cuvette. (lame)

And yes Bill, you can use a salifert cal. kit to test fresh, RO/DI water. I have tested mine and there wasn't enough in their to matter, maybe had to adjust my results by 5ppm.
