Hey all,
Sooo I am clearly doing something wrong. But have no idea which part I am failing at. Not new to the hobby but still totally clueless on this one. So I have been using ESV salt which I mix up in a brute trash can in my garage. I mixed 2 batches from the mix. The first batch was 25 gallons worth and the second was 20 gallons worth. However, I got a new Hanna checker and tested the new water (note the old water was not tested) and the dKH is coming up 16.3!! I didn't even think saltwater could hold that dKH without just precipitating out. Salinity is 34. Refractometer calibrated and it matches the 34 in my tank.
**for those not familiar ESVs salt comes in individual components so that nothing settles out. In fact accuracy from batch to batch is EXACTLY why I made the switch.
I have measured out the remaining mix of a 50 gallon salt mix. They are all relatively close. I have nearly EXACTLY enough of each left over component to make just under 2 more gallons of water.... 1.7 gallons, 1.95 gallons, 1.8 gallons etc. So it is highly unlikely heavily overdosed on the component B or anything.
I have also run multiple multiple tests with the Hanna Checker and they almost always come up 16.3. When I test my tank I get readings around 10 -which seems fairly accurate for where I would have assumed I would have been. I also have floaties in my hanna checker reagent. I would blame them but the readings have been soooo crazy consistent.
What am I missing???
