So I've added 2 TSP of copper power to my 20 gallon QT tank, which should be ~0.8 ppm. I did 4 tests on my hanna copper checker. First vial contained RODI water no salt. The first 2 tests were 0.2 ppm, next was 0.39 ppm, and last was 0.35 ppm. Anyone else have problems with hanna checkers? I thought they were the most accurate tester.

What you do mean by 'first vial contained RODI water'? No RODI water is used with this device. You add tank water to the vial, insert it in the meter, zero the meter by pressing to get the C2 indicator, remove the vial, add the reagent to it and mix briefly, then put the same vial back in the meter and hold the button to get the 45 second countdown.

Oh I thought I had to use water with no CU to zero it.

So first test was with rodi and you got .2ppm ?

I’d run some more tests with rodi to ensure it is reading correctly because if it is ....

No I was using Rodi to zero it and tank water for the test. Did it wrong. Just did another test and got .3 though. Which is still off.

Fill the vial with tank water
Take 1st reading
Add reagent and take 2nd reading.

You added 10ml to 20g of water? Reading should be around .85

What kind of media is in your tank? Any live rock or sand?

Little bit of sand. About 5 pounds.

Just remembered that it’s for salt water and you should test a fresh mixed batch of salt water if you want a control for the test

The sand will absorb it . There should be no live rock or live sand in the QT.

Yup. The only reasonable exception being a small dish of sand if you're QTing sand-sleeping wrasses.
