Hanna Marine Magnesium Checker HI783 Problems/Issues

There are several threads accumulating on the forums of people having issues w/new marine magnesium checker HI783. There are also some similar reports on the AskBRS facebook page--results several hundred points higher. I wanted to start a thread here in Hanna Instruments sub-forum to give Hanna a chance to see the reports of similar issues and address. I personally am despite about a dozen repeated tests using both factory instructions and varied testing procedures to ensure accuracy.

First impressions of Hanna Magnesium Checker HI783 (No more titration for me)

I'm, ok with high since all I'm looking for is above 1200. My tank is typically in the 1600 range anyways, and I never add mag. lol Sounds like you are best off not testing at all. lol Cheaper, easier, and you almost certainly will not get below 1200 ppm regardless of what you do. :)

I’ve posted in one of those threads how the new tester gave me inaccurate (high) results using the Fauna Marin reference solution for the sample water. The magnesium level that was printed on the reference solution was confirmed by my Salifert and Aquaforest magnesium test kits. I also experienced widely varying results on the same sample. I’ve used almost all of the reagents trying to get somewhat accurate and consistent results.

I just bought mine at Sea Creature Aquarium in North Providence. First test 1650, second test 1680 3rd test 1690. Tested 3 times with salifert and got 1460,1450 and 1450. Used red sea and got 1450, 1450, 1440. My trident is reading 1458. Ive tried all the tricks and tips. I have your Alk, Phos, Nitrate checkers so I know how to use it. Also have your salinity checker. The syringes are barley tight on all 3. The airline tubing you have in the tips is to wide and the tips pop off when you push the liquids out. I drew the liquids pushing the tips tightly into the syringe. No liquid was leaking. Did the same when I was putting it in the curvette. I dont think this checker is up to the standards that im use to from a Hanna product.

Well that is the tightest that I have seen... off the mark by 200ish but consistent.

I don’t understand the point of this checker. It’s error is 5% meaning at 1600ppm we are taking 1520 to 1680 ppm, if you only care to be that accurate run a simple salifert test

This is true. But that’s also assuming you’re off by 5% in opposite directions on each test. Ideally that’s not the case and while you might be +/- up to 5% of the actual value, one would hope that the tester is consistently off by +/-x% in the same direction-leaving your trends atleast valid if testing procedure is consistent. However, that’s doesn’t seem to be the case with this particular checker as results are all over the place on the higher end.

Their Alk checker is also +/-5% or 0.3 dKH. So an actual of 8.0 could be 7.7-8.3. But in my experience, I get way more consistent results with the Alk checker.

The Hanna isn’t giving me consistent results. Results also appear to be high compared to my aquaforest test kit. First test was flashing 1800 which means results are out of range. Second test indicated 1695. Aqua forest testing at 1470.

Having the same problems, first test on the tank was out of range(high)second 1780. Tested freshly mixed reef crystals to 35ppt and got 1750, box says it should be 1345 on average.

I just mixed regular old IO and tested it 5 times and got 1690, 1680, 1650, 1700, 1690. Tested with Red Sea and got 1360 tested with Salifert and got 1350.

I've used mine about 10 times now and all but two results have been 1800+. The two times I've been able to get a reading were the first time I used it and when testing a freshly mixed batch of Reef Crystals. Both of those tests were in the 1600s which is higher than the ~1300 that my tank is normally at and that Reef Crystals normally mixes to. An ATI sample was at 1320, Salifert was in the high 1300s to low 1400s, and Red Sea was in the 1400s to 1500s. I tried ensuring that I am adding everything slowly to minimize bubbles, rinsed thoroughly with RODI and let dry, but still can't get the thing to stop reading 1800.

I presume it’s to make it easier to get the reagents out of the bottles.

I think this causes more harm than good. Its hard to get a good seal on these. Im going to try to run a test without the tips.

Not a happy camper. Aqua Forest tested at 1420. Hanna is at 1650. Even the Aqua Forest calibration fluid is reading in the 1600 range With hanna when it should be 1310.

I also mentioned in my email that multiple people are posting similar issues to mine and included a link to this thread in my email. Well see if they acknowledge that part of my email.
