Idea parameter for reef tanks is 1-10 ppm nitrate, but the average id say is like 1-20 ppm nitrate.

Don’t worry about nitrite. As long as you get nitrate and nitrite comes down you’re good. Having nitrite means your ammonia is being converted so that’s good. It’s all about seeing nitrates from here.

15ppm seems very high compared to the ammonia i added?

Don’t worry about nitrites and the numbers. All that matters is the nitrites eventually fall and turn into nitrates and that this process starts becoming more instantaneous as the bacteria population grows. Eventually nitrite won’t even register or if it does it’s barely a blip because the nitrogen cycle is working effectively.
