So new to saltwater and we have 2 tanks we were using the API and recently upgraded to Hanna. On the Hanna Nitrite I got a "30" in one tank and "21" in the other. But then it says to multiply by 3.29. That gives me. 98 in one tank. Is that correct? We just did a water change Saturday so seems odd.

Hello, @stharper2923. This is the Nitrite and not Nitrate test correct?

How old is the tank and how large is this? When you mention water change, how much water did you change?

One should be getting some additional conversion to nitrate. This is what we hope to be getting.

HI764?

Assuming that’s is what you are using, that Hanna nitrite reads in ppb. None of those values are important. Assume it is nearly zero and move on. Nitrite is not toxic in marine systems.

I posted a question about nitrite not being harmful, but then I read your article and I didn't see a way to just eliminate the post. So, I edited it to 'canceled question'.

I was not aware that nitrite acts differently in a marine environment. Until reading your article I had assumed it was similar to freshwater.

I now have more information. The below statement, which was my understanding, should be qualified that at typical 'low levels' it is only a freshwater aquaria concern:

'Nitrite is toxic to fish because it binds with the hemoglobin in fish's blood to form methemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen through the body while methemoglobin does not, so fish in high nitrite waters may suffocate even if sufficient oxygen is present'.

I learn something fundamentally new everyday. ;)
