HANNA Salinity Checker Issues

Hmmm, I know that the induced current from powerheads and pumps can throw off it's readings but if you're doing it in a cup away from the tank, then that's sucks ☹️

So I wanted to keep those that read this updated. I called HANNA on yesterday to inquire about the meter. I was transferred several times and finally got to someone that wanted to help. They stated they had already shipped out a new one. When I had ask about the old meter and what was wrong with it they said that they really didn't investigate it and just shipped out a new one. Overall I am glad they shipped a new one but probably going to sell it based off of the experience and lack of positive words I have to say about their company.

Fyi for those that want to switch over. Premium aquatics has the milwaukee refractometer for $96 instead of the $124. It's like this sale knew I needed to switch!

Honestly haven’t calibrated mine since I bought it 6 months ago. Just checked it using a bottle of calibration solution and it read 34.8. Always a little surprised to see anyone having issues with these. I rinse mine off in tap water after each use and then throw it on the windowsill to dry, so it’s not even like I take great care with it. I’d trust it over a refractometer every time.

Yupp I did the same thing followed all the maintenance steps and mine failed around 5.5 months. They vaguely stated there was no conductivity, excessive oxidation and a defective probe. I loved the ease of it for sure but their customer service is really lacking which is fine, I am just moving in a different direction!

Great and guess what I just acquired for salinity - Just wonderful !

Bought mine when it came out, been dead on ever since.

I have read of many people having issues with it, but mine works great. So much so that the milwaukee sits on a shelf, and my refractometer gets used once a month to check the hanna.

I bought this and just received today and it wont even calibrate at all did everything instructions told me and every time i try to calibrate says Err message very disappointed in this product guess i just need to stick with normal refractometer.

even tryed using every packet of solution to make sure it wasn't a bad batch it read temperature fine and turned on and everything but as soon as i tried calibrating instant err every time made to sure to dip in io water and wiped down to before trying again.

May have to call hanna
Im sure there is something on you tube although you shouldn’t have to resort to that

Hi All,

I wanted to ask on here if any one has been having issues with Hanna's Salinity checker HI98319. It was working like a champ for the first couple of months with regular calibrations every month. Now it is not staying calibrated to save its life! I have used a few other checks (refractometer, Hanna refractometer) and those are consistent. The deviation between just a few day is .05 Specific gravity depending on the day, basically rendering this thing useless unless I wanted to calibrated it everyday. Now I understand there is a difference between the refractometer and conductivity but I would expect this thing to stay calibrated for more than a day. Below I have included a conversation I had with their customer support that seemed odd for some additional context. My questions to you all are: is anyone having this problem? Should I really pay to send it to them for diagnosis or just go a different route? I find really hard to believe that I need to have this thing calibrated every time I don't want a reading that is extremely off. Full disclosure there was additional emails sent but did not see the need to include those as he just gave me their shipping information and reference articles on the different between salinity measurement tools.

Me:
"Hello,
I wanted to reach out as I am having some issue with the HI98319 Salinity Checker. My issue is it will not stay calibrated for longer than a few days. I have followed the instructions to the letter especially for storage. The deviation I am getting from the instrument is .05 below what I compare it to, which is a standard refractometer and your HI96822 both calibrated before the test. Below I have included the instructions required information for contacting you.
Model Number: HI98319
S/N: LA02500683
Date of Purchase: 3/13/19
Thank you,
Nick

Hanna:
"Nick,
There specific days it should stay calibrated. The manual recommends you calibrate whenever high accuracy is required.
I can issue you a RMA# if you want to send the meter into us for evaluation. Give me your shipping information."

I’m having same issue. Have to calibrate every single time and sometimes it will say error while trying to calibrate. So frustrating.

I've had mine for about a year and not having this issue so I'd say defective unit, if you just got it (or at least still in warranty).

FWIW, my one experience with Hanna support (Phosphate ULR checker) was a positive one.

I know this is an old thread, but still a very apparent problem with Hanna products. I have both their Salinity and PH meter, both less than a year old. Neither will hold calibration, and as a result have introduced wild swings and significant coral deaths in my tank before I realized it is the Hanna products failing.

I would contact Hanna as Mine is always on track. I do rinse in RO water after each use
