How many of you guys shell out for these, are they worth it, which ones do you buy, if you have bought them are you happy, would you buy more or less testers than originally bought, thanks for your help

I have the Hanna salinity checker and think it’s awesome. Convenient and easy to use. I looked at the Milwaukee Instruments one for twice the cost. Didn’t make sense.

I will probably pick up the Alkalinity and Phosphate units as I think titration is a pain and im not a fan of comparing colors.

I have the big milwakee salinity tester. It's probably the most accurate meter I have. I have a refractometer. But now know it's usually off by about 2-3ppt every time even after its calibrated. The milwakee is always dead on.

dead on compared to?

The Hanna testers measure the absorption of colored light absorbed by the sample. The result is displayed as a number. Two people using Hanna testers should get very similar numbers.

Other tests use on of two methods. You estimate concentration by the intensity of color. Or you titrate your sample and you wait for a specific color change and the amount of reagent you added will give you your number.

The problem with either of these methods is they are based on eyeball estimates. I am not convinced in the reliability of my eyes to really accurately judge color intensity or a specific color change at precisely the right shade.

The Hanna ALK tester has a very good reputation. Some of the other ALK tests are almost as good in my estimation. The Hanna ULR phosphate test is the only test on the market that is sensitive enough for many reef aquariums. Some of their testers are less highly regarded.

So are they worth it? It depends on your situation and your goals.
