Hanna ULR Phosphorus or ULR Phosphate

After a little whoopsie (bad test kit) and my Phosphates rising to high levels I want to pickup a Hanna checker. However, I can’t decide between the Hanna ULR Phosphorus (HI736) or the new Hanna ULR Phosphate (HI774). I am not talking about the old Hanna Low Range Phosphate (HI713). Any input is appreciated!

I have the phosphorus checker. Works great. Personally I would get the new phosphate checker because it doesn’t time out and you don’t have to convert ppb to ppm.

The new HI774 Phosphate is definitely the way to go. The old one will time out after two minutes so, even though is supposedly slightly more accurate, its hard to trust the readings.

The new one gives you plenty of time.

Depend on your po4 level and the level you want to achieve.
- The ulr hi736 is for low ranges (zero to 200 ppb ) and reads in ppb(part per billion)
- They also recently released new ultra low range hi 774, but it reads in ppm (range zero to 0.9ppm).
- The other one hi713 is for higher ranges ( zero 2.5ppm) and nd reada ppm( part per milliom)

Usually in the reefing community ppm reading is what's commonly used.

So:
If you running low po4 system get the hi774
If you running higher po4 system get the hi713.

Ya definitely shooting for the low range PO4. What threw me off the the accuracy of the HI736 being +/-5%. I’ll go ahead and order the HI774.

Accuracy is -+0.02 that's so so low already.
Their resolution is 0.01ppm if am not mistaken.
For a home kit that's the best you get.
The red sea low po4 tester is very good but using it is bit of pain.

Yoi will need to be very careful with the glass of the test container. It need to be very clean otherwise it will impair the measurment since it's at such low.level.
I advice you buy their cleaning g cloth I use it its antiatatic that can clean glass really well.

Also do not clean the container after test using tap water. Tap water will have some.impurties that will stay inside the container and can also throw off the test a bit.. I use either rodi water or distilled water to clean the inside of the container after test.

That's great idea.
Honestly what I started doing since last year, I buy hannah cleaning solution. Its special antistatic solution that if you rinse the container with, it make it hard for particles to stick to it...paired with their outer cleaning solution and cloth it make the glass spotless.

They sell the whole thing as a package:
Cleaning cloth
Anti static cleaner that goes with the cloth to clean the outside of the glass
Container cleaner solution that I clean the inside with.

The package is cheap and last me for a while..

Every now and then they run sales on their product I jump on these consumables.
I buy directly from them, their website have loads of little things that help improve test methodologies of each if their kits which are massive ammount of kits from lab to home uses..

Both ppm and pbb low range checkers are the same. The ppm will avoid you doing the calculation to convert to ppm. So if your intent is low range I would go with the ppm hi774. But keep in mind the low range will go up to 2.5ppm only. Hence, decide on the range and choose the hi774 or the other higher range checker...make sense?

I had the same tough time deciding on which one to get. I went with the newer hi774 and haven’t regretted it. Its in line with what my red sea kit said as well as my ATI ICP test. I wash the vial in tap immediately after the test then rinse multiple times in RODI water. I then place the cap and vial in a container and fill it with RODI to store it. When im ready to test again i shake it dry and give the inside a quick rinse with tank water. Then i fill to the line and run the test. Works amazing! I do the same with the alk checker as well!

So before I take preventative measures to lower Phosphate I want to make sure I know exactly what my level is. Therefor the HI774 looks like it will be fine. Worst case I’ll order it and the HI736.

You wont need the hi736... the hi774 is the way to go!
