My current refractometer broke so I'm in the market for a new one. After seeing the price for the recommended Red Sea refractometer I'm wondering if its worth the extra cost to go with the Hannah checker? Is one more accurate than the other? or is it just preference?

The Hanna salinity checker is nice for getting a basic measurement of salinity and temp.
A properly calibrated refractometer will be more accurate.

This is what i use

i use it with

Just check the refractometer with the solution and thats the perfect salinity, match that with your tanks water and done. super easy to use and very accurate. my milwakee refracto is over 2 years old and its accuracy has lowered by 1 point but thats not a big deal. for me now 1.025 is 1.026 so its still extremely simple and accurate.

Purchased the handheld hanna checker about a month ago, and found it to be within +/- 1ppt of the Red Sea refractometer. That being said, neither of those were even close to my Apex salinity probe so go figure.

Since buying the hanna, my refractometer sits on a shelf. Of course I used both for a few months just to confirm the hanna's accuracy.

But as stated, if a test is easier to perform, you'll do it more often, and that is certainly not a bad thing!

I just got the Hannah as a quick and easy replacement for my refractometer and I love it. My calibrated refractometer reads the same as my calibrated Hannah checker but the Hannah is faster and it also gives me temperature so it's a solid upgrade in my opinion.

I've been using the Hanna one for two months now and have no regrets. Easy and quick to use. The only con is reoccurring costs for calibration liquid packets to maintain instrument accuracy. We're talking about a cup of coffee a month which is nothing.

Definitely Hanna or Milwaukee. I chose the Hanna as it was on sale when I was shopping, and am totally pleased with the purchase. Only warning is to calibrate with the Hanna solution pack. People who gave the Hanna checker bad reviews typically didn’t follow the directions. Other quick tip. Hanna uses conductivity to measure salinity. So don’t just dip the checker into your aquarium or sump as the particulates in the water may screw up measurement. I put a small sample of the water into a cup let It settle for a few min (not sure if necessary) and take measurement in there.

the apex salinity probe is not accurate AT ALL. its the worst probe they have, i even took mine off my apex a few months ago because it started reading really high for no reason. Get a few bottles of the BRS refractometer calibration fluid and just match that. ignore the probes craziness.
