Hannah salinity checker

Hit and miss from what I have read.. mine reads low but it’s constant and super easy to use. It would be nice if it was spot on or had a way to calibrate it manually but I know when it’s reading 1.024 it’s actually reading 1.026. I determined the discrepancy by carefully calibrated my hydrometer using fresh calibration fluid and to confirm results I made my own calibration fluid using Randy’s formula. I then compared hydrometer to Hanna and also checked results with the Hana at my LFS for super redundancy.

Omen of my friends said the same exact thing. At 1.024 it’s actually 1.026. That’s kind of why I posted here, seeing if anyone has it off

Mine seems low as well, not seeing a great value in it if it can't be trusted, and fall back on other testers.
Debating a return as defective.

Hit and miss.. the first one I got was reading low also. 1.24 where it was 1.26. I calibrated twice.. brought it back to my local lfs and they tried to calibrate it. They gave me a new one that is spot on

Brs was great when i called, should have a new one in my hands tomorrow. Should be interesting, hope it works better. If still low, might take both and drive over there to see what i can find. They are local, and i think would also be interested to figure it out

I have hope though,

well, the new one read about the same, i also ordered calibration drops for my refractometer, to make sure that was right on.
i decided after a couple calls to BRS to send them back, here is the exchange and what they have told me about it. Mind you on the phone, they advised i send them back , i did calibrate them to my tank water, then they read as expected, but low with the calibration solution.

BRS .......Thanks for reaching out to us. Our testing results from yesterday stated the HI98319 Marine Salinity Tester was not defective and we were able to calibrate to the standard and test tank water accurately. For our next steps we can either send it back, if not issue you a refund minus 10% for the restocking fee. If you have any further questions please let us know. Hope to hear from you soon!

Me........Hmm, strange. Reading ppt?? Or something else? At what temp was the calibration fluid?? I called a few times trying to resolve why the temp and the calibration read low. And why I was unable to calibrate it and re read the calibration fluid at 35 again. I purchased some of your 35pt refractometer solution to verify my refractometer was at 35, then tested the tank at 35. I would calibrate the new meter, then test the tank it read 32, if I were to calibrate it in the 35ppt tank, then it read the second tank as expected in comparison to the refractometer. If I calibrated it in the included packets it read both tanks low. When I called I was told to send them back, no problem.
What am I missing here??

BRS.......The product is really only intended for testing fresh mixed saltwater and not for testing tank water due to contaminates can interfere with the reading. Along with that if you don't let it settle you can get inaccurate results and ambient room temperature is recommended for the fluid. If you have any further questions please let us know.

what ??? sounds like my best bet is to pay the restocking fee and be done. I don't buy for a second these are only intended for new water, that would indicate that i need a different device to check tank water ?? Makes me wonder if it was calibrated by them at all, or if they just went off my tank calibration and dunked it in and said it was good. Room Temp, my room might be 65, another might be 80, easy to see the meter reads different at different temperatures. I had a seperate thermometer in the water in a cup floating the calibration packet, to bring to different temperatures.. the ppt was definitely different.
i wanted to like this, thats why they sent out a second one. i guess 10% to be done is a price i am willing to pay. Part of me wants to drive up there with my refractometer, and watch them calibrate, test, and then compare to my calibrated with their solution refractometer. The refractometer drops were purchased the same time as the 2nd meter was sent.

How did you go with this one brother?

I’ve had mine for a month and went to recalibrate it tonight and it’s just saying error. I’m going to call hanna here in Australia tomorrow to find out why it’s inaccurately reading low and why the **** I can’t calibrate it. I tried 3 different bags of solutions but no go with any of them. I can’t find anything about this error on the web.

They are intended as a portable salinity tester i.e brs are full of **** because of that reason. They are meant for scientist/hobbyists to take to places for research..... so they would always be in dirty water.

The old man also has a hanna ph pen $350aud and it’s crap. Works one day and not the next. I’m starting to think you would have to spend thousands to get a decent product off the rats.

Mine is collecting dust. I was losing my mind listening to Hanna customer service trying to convince me that my 1.026 reading on 3 other devices is actually 1.023 based upon Hanna and Hanna is more accurate.

I have three different good refractometers and you can calibrate all of them with the same test solution and the next test they will all read something entirely different.

The Hanna salinity meter is way more accurate for me and it’s extremely easy to use. Temp and salinity seems spot on as far as I can tell. I set mine to ppt and use it to test the tank and fresh tank water. I calibrate it with the Hanna packets, but have tested it with other solutions and it’s always correct.

I love mine. I recommend 1000%. Super fast. you can get insta readings in about 3-4 seconds.

Just got one a reef a palooza seems pretty accurate compared to my Red Sea refractometer love it!

Same here

Mine works fine for a few weeks then needs to be recalibrated. I bought a box of their calibration fluid and as soon as i get a strange reading (i know the tank is almost always at or close to 35.0) with the salt mix, then i know something is off and recalibrate and it's fine. It's not the best or most accurate but it's by far the easiest. I also have 2, to double check when i have any additional doubts. Struggled with the Milwaukee unit for 6 months before getting the hanna - which again, is close enough and easy to reset. My $0.02

I owe a few hanna checkers and this was next on my list, but it just seems more of a hassle than anything. I trusts my refractometer all the time... I keep it calibrated with the BRS solution and upgraded to the lid with the light. I have learned the hard way that simple is better at times.

I have been running a comparison between my TM hygrometer and the Hanna salinity checker (calibrated regularly). I have long suspected it is reading low, and it turns out it is:

Hanna - 1.023
TM hydrometer - 1.025 (corrected for actual water temp)

Don´t go chasing numbers is my belief.. nothing bad will happen if your salt level sits at 24 or 26. consistency in the reading is more important imo. Only laboratorium grade and calibrated measurements are accurate, and bevond the hobbyist scope.
