Being from the Gulf coast I remember Mardi Gras. Nobody here seems to even know about it.

NOLA! I've not been during Mardi Gras, but was there in August. Awesome beignets, jazz and friendly bars...... If anyone has not been, take the Amtrak and enjoy an unforgettable trip!
