I have noticed a couple of my zoas have a hard algae which sticks to the mat of the zoa really well & is hard to remove.

Anyone know what it could be & how to remove it? Thanks

I have actually noticed the same thing on one of my frags and it is causing problems. I haven't had time to try to chip it off, but this weekend I'll probably just frag that mini colony and see what happens.

i dont no if you remember but i had gotten attacked by that type of hard brown algee when one of my colonys but it was all over them not only the base the tops of them too so they were not open for 3 weeks. i dippped them in fresh water and peroxide for about less then 5 minnutes then toop a q-tip and swearled it around the mat and the base and i did what josh did too but with a knife i tried to pluck some of it off. after the 4th week and 2 50/50 dips later they finnaly started opening. and now there big fat and more healthy then ever and came back with more color belive it or not lol.

It sounds like the same thing as it is going up onto the stalks, I did a dip in seachem coral disinfectant. I remember a similar time when my clementines got it & it covered them which killed a couple but I managed to dip in seachem & the hermit seemed to take it off over night.

Yeah its annoying Dave its took out 14 clementines so far. Its also on jokers & a couple others.

Here's an example this was done time ago but the algae has no grown up some of the stalks and has grown over some baby's :S

How much peroxide do u guys do for like a cup of h20? And r u guys using aquarium water or just fresh water? Thanks I have similar problem on a couple frags.

Usually I would manually remove that with skinny tweezers, scraping the rock out in between then address water parameters that cause that.... High phospates, low flow(detritus settling), maybe too high light but doubtful.

Definitely manual scraping would stop the irritation of the coral by the algae. Then hit with high flow temporarily to remove waste and to help oxygenate.

25% H2O2 and 75% tank water for a minute or 2.
See how they react. Algae should be gone.
Use the 3% Hydrogen peroxide from pharmacy.
Better try smaller amounts first and see if problem is solved without hurting the zoas with stronger dosages.

Grandis.
