I've had my 525 tank sitting empty for a couple of months, the wife decided to remodel the house after I bought the tank. ;Facepalm

I would like to hard plumb the tank and I'm aware Redsea chose to go with metric. I plan on building a small manifold, 3 - 4 outputs, but would like to keep everything serviceable. I'm having a problem adapting the metric to standard. I've read a number of threads/tank builds trying to figure out which would be most beneficial and reliable.

I saw Broadfield's (https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/b...build-ocd-inspired-going-green.211616/page-18)
and Suncrest's (https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/suncrestreefs-red-sea-reefer-xl-425-build.358990/page-7) method utilizing the 3/4' MPT x 3/4" slip with the Redsea barbed adapter. This seems like the easiest but I've read the Redsea part (#42222) was no longer sold with the barb removable but glued. Has anyone confirmed this is true? I saw there is another adapter (#42221) but was not sure if this could be utilized on the 525.

I also saw Whip's (https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/whip’s-red-sea-reefer-xxl-750-hybrid-bare-bottom-build.529733/page-3) method of sanding/machining a threaded nipple to slip into the Redsea bulkhead but this seems to leave little serviceability later.

If I had the ability I would remove the Redsea bulkheads and replace them with standard but I do not feel comfortable removing the overflow tower, scraping the factory bulkhead and plate.

I know there is a ton of info on this subject but I'm just trying to tie it all together and get up to date advice on this. I have the XL525 ver 3 sump with the return pump on the right side. Any help will be much appreciated not just by me but anyone looking for this in the future. I will take photos and post the progress for future reference.

Thanks

I used the Broadfield method to hard plumb my 750xxl. If you are ok with PVC instead of flexed tubing the broadfield method works well

I just did this for my 900 3XL. I dont know the size of your pipes, mine were 40mm for drain and 25mm for return. It is written on pipes themselves. I bought Metric sized unions the same size as the pipe from Coralvue, then metric to standard conversion fittings from BRS (I think Coralvu emay sell them also) It turned out be very easy

svogun,

Broadfields method seems the easiest but which Redsea part did you use #42222 or #42221? Where you able to unscrew the barb fitting as several folks have stated #42222 is now glued together.

Thanks

Mountain Reefer,

Thanks, I did not see the metric to std unions. The 525 uses 32mm. Were you able to attach the Coralvue conversion union directly to the Redsea downpipe that sticks out just past the bulkhead? Are the threads the same? Do you happen to have any photos of yours?

Thanks

Sorry, I am not home for a while so cant take pictures. The union is not a converter, it is simply a slip/slip metric union. I did not use them directly at the bulkhead. they are slip, not threaded. I cut the pipe close to the bulkhead, after the elbows. Glued the union on one side to nub of pipe, then glued the metric to standard converter to other side of union union (it is spigot on metric side and slip on standard side) then glued standard pipe onto other side. Hope that makes sense.

No problem, I appreciate the help. So you utilized the conversion unions after the elbows, got it. I'm still trying to find out if the Redsea fitting (42222) is still threaded or glued before I commit to a direction.

Thanks

I believe Broadfield used the Resea #42222 and unscrewed the threaded barb end. Then threaded the 3/4" MPT end of the MPT x Slip adapter into the Redsea adapter. There does not seem to be any clear description of this, just partially mentioned throughout threads. The only problem I'm noticing is that some have mentioned the Redsea fitting is no longer threaded on but glued.

If anyone can confirm the Redsea part (42222) is still threaded I would be very grateful.

I was able to unscrew it. Tank is about 2 years old

svogun,

Thanks, another forum member PM'd with some additional info and photo's.

FLSharkVictim,
Nice tank, I wish I had looked at other smaller manufacturers prior to buying the Redsea. Might have avoided a few obstacles. How's the tank working out? I read over your build thread, nice setup.

I contacted Red Sea and the 42222 is no longer removable. The 42221 is still removable and the plumbing is the same dimensions, so it will fit the xl425 plumbing even though it isn’t listed for that tank.
