Harlequin Bristle Starfish has smaller legs now

I added a new harlequin bristle starfish a couple of weeks ago. He’s been hiding in the rocks for over a week now. He recently came out to the front of the tank and noticed that all of his legs are much smaller. Any idea what could be going on ?

He may have lost and already regrown a leg or two (it happens).
