Has anyone had luck keeping clams under 4" alive?

Years ago I had more than 30 clams -18 in a 70 gal Oceantic tech tank and 14 in an Oceanic Half-Round. Smallest was about 1 1/4" to the largest being about 2 1/2" when purchased. Phyto went into each tank every day and they were under a 400 watt halide with pc's in one tank and 6 t5's in the other. I kept most of these from 2 - 4 1/2 yrs. and they all had good growth. Some a little more than others. No idea what happened - I call it the "clam plague" but in a matter of 20 days, I lost every one of them except for my blue squamosa. I was so thrilled to still have him a month or so after losing all the others. One day I accidentally knocked him off the rock and tore his bysal. He was gone within 2 days. Though they say no clam needs food only light to survive, I am a firm believer that
phyto in the water column is a definite plus since they do filter.
