Has anyone on here used ALGONE?

A glance at the product shows it to be a "natural" addition without chemicals, containing enzymes and bacteria. I saw a review of the product and it appears to be some kind of water clarifier/nitrate reducer.

In general I am suspicious of claims of products that do not contain any chemicals...see the whole Vibrant fiasco. As an aside, everything is chemicals so it's not a bad word, but I wouldn't put anything in my tank where I can't see the true contents or an MSDS.

Quick fixes are tempting but I would rather export nutrients and remove algae via water change, cleanup crew, manual removal, gfo, skimmer, or any other method where you can see how the soup is made.

I used it my tanks for a few months over the winter. Tests revealed no real net reduction of nitrates.
My initial thought was "snake oil". A quick search online seems to share this consensus.
I just wanted to try it for algae specifically I do run carbon. I mean I don’t think it’ll hurt especially because I got some for free. Reviews were mixed with most using it for freshwater.

I believe that each package is essentially filled with inert materials, so it's unlikely that you'll do your tank any harm if you try it out. I did run two packets in spare reactor in the sump of my RSR350 to see if it made a difference...but no. Dosing NoPox (and Prime, for that matter) was clearly better.

if the first rule is and should "first do no harm" (and since its free) sounds like David said it didn't hurt

But I don't like to out anything in that I do not know for sure it will be worth any risk (and it was free)

Is it true you have a 20 gallon tank, can you post a pic of it curious how your algae is expressing. You’d be amazed what a good set of pics does for algae control options.

for example, this is about 30 gallons, once had an algae problem Gator_Reefer

since your end goal was algae fix, curious how its set in so far given natural settings and time…will be interesting to see what kind is beginning a run.

Here’s a video which shows it much better and it’s not TERRIBLE! Note videos only load on a computer.

That tank looks so nice in HD, we should not surgically alter it to its core. It takes a lot for me to state that btw, to leave a tank as is :)

Miracles in a bottle seldom are as advertised. Manage parameters, remove what you can by hand, bolster clean up crew, dose live phyto. Those are the best things you can.

I was using Microbacter more so for the ugly stage/diatoms but haven’t dosed in a little while figured…I’d just let nature take it’s course and ALGONE can’t hurt so I did add it. I did think about a small ping pong sized tuxedo urchin but eventually I want a small starfish. I haven’t dosed phytoplankton I should I know it had several benefits. Maybe some will be at Reef-A-Palooza this weekend.

Thanks! Waiting for the coralline to spread.
