I built a sump very similar to this back in the early 90's. It was for a FOWLR and I had great success with it. One difference, though, was that I used an external pump as a return.

I would prefilter H2O and use largest crushed coral for colonizing bacteria and hopefully help with ph. I did one similar in the 1980s.
