Really consider Hanna or Salifert
You may be getting false readings especially ammonia but to verify, take a water sample to a store that does NOT use Api kits and have them test your ammonia and nitrates and compare readings- then you'll know where your levels truly are at
I will never trust a $7 badge or $25 master kit to sustain hundreds of dollars in livestock.

I haven’t started a new tank in so long I almost forget how to ….
I’ve always dropped a raw shrimp in and let it decompose .
when it was gone I started adding fish

Haha well I don't think it needs to breakdown and disappear completely but some still do that. I personally dislike the smell lol
