Correct me if I'm wrong but if I treat flukes in a display tank with prazi, does this not only relieve the fish of the flukes but also kills hatchlings? Lastly does the DT have to go fallow?

I was going through a old post by HB and this caught my attention:

"Prazipro will only help if flukes are afflicting the gills. Otherwise, it only delays a more suitable treatment..."

I was under the impression that it will kill flukes in the DT without having to go fallow. 2-3-4 doses may be required was my understanding.

Treating with Prazipro in a display tank is not preferred. But some do that out of necessity. Like being unable to catch and remove all the fish. So they accept the risk that some flukes "may" survive.

Best to move the fish into a QT. Treat them there and let the DT go fallow for 4 weeks to starve out the flukes.

Interesting. So I have had the wrong understanding since starting in this hobby. Is there any dosing regimen that can fully eradicate flukes without going fallow? Or will there always be survivors?

Always learning something new in this hobby.

Start with FW dip and treat with prazi. Can do in another bucket , although I have done so in display tank successfully treating at 80$ of recommended dosage

Thanks for the info. How many doses did it take when you treated the display?

You don't have to let the tank go fallow but that's the best practice if you really want to be rid of them. The risk you run is that eggs will remain in the tank.

The praziquantel doesn't kill the eggs at the same doses used to kill adult flukes so you'd have to add a significant amount more to your tank or continuously dose over a period of time to be sure you'd eradicated them.

The prazi will also kill any worms (including feather dusters) that you've got in the tank which is why a lot of people are reluctant to add it to the display. If you've got a lot of worms in your sandbed/any large feather dusters it'll kill them and potentially cause an ammonia spike.
