I hate sand. Every tank I put it in, the sand gets dirty. I’m not saying I hate substrates, I’m saying I hate sand. My axolotls poo in it, then for some dumb reason bury it. My planted cube only gets filthy in one spot, the sand!

You have to pay me a lot of money to use sand in my saltwater tank.

20 years in fresh water... always hated bare bottom tanks.. that wont ever change for me lol.. nore will it with my reef.

In fact today i raised my sand level from 1 inch to 3 inchs LOL. Although ive never had a dirty sand bed.. I might get some dinos on it sometimes.. but so far my sand bed is nearing 2 years old and its still white with the occasional dinos in aome spots.

I mean glass gets dirty too.. i imagine the bottom of the glass would get that lovely build up of brown.green algae overtime.. unless you plan to razorblade it every 2 days like the front panel

I have one bare bottom and one with sand. I much prefer the look of the sand and like the critters that are with the sand bottom. The bare bottom is so much easier to siphon out though.

I've always had sand but the tank I'm building now is going to be bare bottom. I think I'm going to miss the things that take place in and on the sand such as gobies digging their burrows. I'll give it a shot knowing there's a good chance I'll end up adding sand eventually.

120 is bare bottom.
45 frag/lagoon system is 1" sandbed.
Have a diamond goby that keeps it clean.
I get a little algae but it comes from the skylight that hits the tank.
Nice shimmer though.
The tank is only 12" so super easy to run a acrylic rod through the sand every couple days.
A bare bottom wont be bare for long though.

Some people split the baby. A FOWLR bare bottom, with fish that will eat corals or a CUC anyway, and a second (smaller?) reef tank with sand, and all the little critters. I have done that in the past, personally. Kind of like the best of both worlds.

I have sand in main display, 40g and traveling tank. My 20g is bare bottom. Granted, my 40g is hadonni carpets, my main display has malus and I love the sand critters, and the 20g is a qt, but whatever.

I hate dirty sand and my sand is always dirty. I vacuum, I add creatures, I plead and beg and it is always dirty.
