I just recieve a bucket of "old reef rock" and its dirty. It has been sitting under my neighbor's porch for a few years. I would like to clean this stuff up and use it but not sure how to do it safely. I'm guessing.... Wash the rock as good as possible with a garden hose and brush. Put rock in lg. bucket for a few days and do it again. Clean bucket and add salt water, live rock piece, heater and pump. Let cycle for ? time. Any other suggestions? I also posted this on NARC (local reef club forum) Just trying to get some more suggestions.

There is a method for cleaning it with muriatic acid then rinsing, however I have not done so. There are threads on it if you do a search. It seems like it would work quite well.

and if you cant afford that i would rinse all of them in ro/di water. then boil them. :)

I always do my cleaning of rock and old coral with bleach at a 5 to 1 ratio( 1 part bleach to 5 parts water). leave it in that for 2 hours , then put in a new container and leave a hose running slowly on it for 2 or 3 hours until you cannot smell bleach on the rock, then stand in R/O water overnight.
Rock or coral will be cleaned and sterilised and ready for your tank
