I’m a fan of the Modular Marine overflows. I have their 1200 gph overflow, upgraded from their stock 3/4” drains to 1” drains. It’s installed on my Deep Blue 57 rimless (36x18x20), same footprint as a 40 breeder, but 4” taller. Because I’m using a Trigger 26 sump, which is very limited in space, I’ve capped off one of the drains and am using the overflow as a 2 drain Herbie set up. It runs silently. Here are some photos for reference.

Drilled tank with dual 1/2” returns...

Holes taped off accounting for the gaskets so I can paint the back of the tank and maintain a clean gasket seal with unpainted glass. Note that the gaskets for the overflow sit on the exterior of the tank while the baskets for the returns sit on the interior of the tank on the bulkhead flanges...

Here are a couple of shots of the overflow installed along with the dual RFG (random flow generator) return nozzles. Love the low profile look of the ghost style overflows...

Here is a look at the primary and secondary drains of the Herbie set up going into my Trigger 26 sump...

I've personally installed the XAqua In/Out on two of my previous systems (an ADA 60P and IM Nuvo 30).

Wouldn't hesitate to use it again on a smaller system (under 50 gals). It's pretty elegant with a low profile and runs completely silent.

How did you get it to be silent? I love the profile on it but the drain on mine runs loud down the tube. Any tips?

I just read through your build. I bow to your superiority. Truly awe inspiring.

How did you get it to be silent? I love the profile on it but the drain on mine runs load down the tube. Any tips?

My first tank had a first generation model, which actually gurgled a bit, I inserted some airline tubing down the overflow intake to silence the gurgle. The second generation model seemed to fix this issue.

As far as sound within the tube, for both tanks I used threaded flex tubing which allowed for a smooth curve for output into the tank (getting it to slip on was a PITA). If you have a PVC application, a tuned gate valve might help, but I'm not a plumbing expert!

Oh, it was so long ago (2012?) any pics I might have taken are probably long gone.

If about the airline tubing, I just inserted a short length of tube in between the slats in the grate and guided it down into the down tube/hose and tweaked it a bit until the gurgling stopped, then zip tied the tube to the grate so it wouldn't move/slip. I'm sure you could do something a bit more elegant.

If it's the hose, I just bought the right diameter hose from Home Depot and ran it into the sump, and clamped it down to the unit.

Both were such hack jobs, but worked just fine!

The water level definitely didn't cover the entire drain, probably 10-20% of the drain hole height was open to air. I'd imagine that if the entire drain was covered, you have too much flow into the tank (edit: relative to drainage capacity) and might risk the DT spilling over (something to watch out for if you go with the gate valve solution).

I like this for ease. But truthfully I want the challenge of drilling my own. I have the same stand as you. My darling husband made a low shelf for mine. And painted it black to match. I do lose some height though.

I looked at your build. Fantastic. There is no way I could do what you did. I need a minimalist form of it. I will be looking at it many more times. I was already going to get a cabinet to set next to my larger tank to house some stuff neatly. The inn table is just tacky! I love your organisational skills.
