Have you used a Magnetic stirrer?

For all of the gear junkies out there, have any of you used a magnetic stirrer for some of the chemicals that you use?

In the past, I have tried to set up coral snow on a dosing pump but it tends to separate in the bottle, But setting this up on an automatic stirrer for 5 min a day just before its dosed would alleviate that problem. these magnetic stirrers use a metal filed capsule that goes inside the bottle and then it uses magnets to spin. I have no idea how long these capsules can stay submerged before deteriorating or if they will deteriorate at all.

I hope I'm not the first to have this idea.

Yup, I use one when mixing up 2 part and other assorted additives. The magnetic stirrer that goes into the solution to be mixed is coated in teflon. They can stay in the solution indefinitely with no damage occurring to the teflon jacket. However, the teflon jacket can eventually wear away depending on the surface it is spinning against. So periodic examination for wear would be a good idea.

I've used them for a variety of purposes and we use them in the lab at work all the time. They are neat little tools. As Dennis stated the stir rod can stay submerged indefinitely. Stir rods come in a variety of sizes so you can pick one that works best for your application.

Thank you both for your input. I think that I may get one or 2 of them. I know the coral snow definitely needs to be stirred regularly so that will be the first that gets it so that I can dose it. I like to automate as much as I possibly can so this will help with that.

Worst thing on magnetic capsules that wear out in container is your adding little iron, should help PO4 to decrease alittle. But I've had my cheapo mag. stirrer alittle over two years, on continuously on, no issues. Also the fittings most dosing pumps come with will clog. I mod mine by replacing those fittings with 3/16 rigid tubing, now no clogging. With my doser, I feed powder foods of spiralina, reef roids every 3 hrs, 2ml.
