Hello!

So I drilled a refugium and have it all plumbed, have live rock rubble and chaeto in it. My next question is what do I need to have a successful Refugium? Should I put sand in it? A small powerhead?

Appreciate any advice!

I run a small power head in my fuge. The chaeto really seemed to grow better after introducing more flow. I don't keep sand or mud. Just don't want to deal with cleaning it. Some people say they get better pod population with sand or mud. I just have rock rubble in the bottom. A lot of it comes down to personal preference and learning what works best for you.

I’ll be cleaning my sump/fuge today. Detritus accumulates in my fuge area. I have no sand, because it would trap the detritus even more than my macro already does. It just makes it easier to clean. I used to have a small power head in there, but it would clog up the power head and taking it out didn’t affect my macro growth or pod production. I also just pulled out the few pieces of live rock that I had in there and set up a nano for my gorilla crab. We’ll have to wait and see how that affects the tank, but I don’t expect any issues. I don’t have any mechanical filtration before my fuge, so that’s something to take into consideration.

Yeah I have my line running off my return pump. So it goes up to the Refugium, and back down to the return chamber.

I have miracle mud ,chaeto , and tiger pods in my refugium.
I am still learning how to deal with sps in my display tank suffering due to 0 nitrate readings and I assume it’s due to my chaeto in refugium . Trying to find the right balance .more fish , less lighting time, smaller chaeto?
