Does anyone have any update on Hawaii? I heard it was supposed to open back up but now the ruling is stuck in pending.

Nope nothing new so far. Last I heard/checked permits were still not being issued and had a few other things you needed to do/qualify for to even get one issued.

I did see a yellow tang on sale for $75 on a local group though, so there's that. Oh and our NSW is free. :grinning-face-with-sweat:

I don’t have an aquarium yet, but my fish of interest are: Epaulette Shark, Blue Tang, Yellow tang, And maybe a stingray. I live in Hawaii so coral and anemone ownership is illegal. Is there any tips you have for these fish? The tank size I would get is 200G.

The latest update this month August 2024. The Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) is seeking preliminary approval of an application form and permit terms and conditions from the Board of Land and Natural Resources (Board or BLNR) to facilitate the permitting process for commercial aquarium collecting in West Hawaiʻi.

You can watch it live or submit personal statement at this link to the agenda...

Yeah you need a wayyy bigger tank for the shark and stingray… like 700 gallons bare minimum type tank

Recently found out you can’t possess a shark or ray in Hawaii
Ah well then you dont have to worry about finding a 700 gallon tank lol!

they will issue some permits and people will gasp in horror when wild caught caught yellows are now $100 rather than the $20 they were hoping for.
I’m not convinced that anyone thinks that wild Yellow Tangs will ever again be $20. I’d love to see $70-$80, but my guess is that they’ll at least be in the $100-$120 range. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see them north of $200 considering that so many people seem to think that they’re “better” than captive bred.

Glad to hear it's moving forward, only 7 potential permits may be rough, but it's a start rather than the nonsense of the last few years.

also does anyone know the porcupine fish species that requires the smallest tank? I don’t a big budget for 180g so I was hoping for something smaller

After all the personal statements where heard at the meeting (over 8 hours), the board took legal advice from the Deputy State attorney who was present at the meeting. They returned and discussed any amendments which indicated the board would vote in favour and open up the issue of licences.

However at the last minute the case was contested by a member of the indigenous groups on cultural grounds.

Therefore the board could not vote on the decision.

This means a new meeting will need to be held as a contested case.

No licences will be issued until that is resolved.

A point of interest was the suggestion by members of the board to remove Kole Tangs from the white list along with the Unicorn fish. Also that the catch quota for Yellow tangs be halved. This is now irrelevant as the case is contested a new hearing with cross examination be processed.

When will that meeting be held I have no idea.

The full hearing and personal statements can be see in the video
