Hawaii Fish

I just had an interesting discussion with a new store owner in my area (who I do not approve of operating a store for many reasons) about treating bacterial infections on his new shipment of fish, they are not well versed in quarantine procedures and their loss rate is very high so far. But the interesting part is he mentioned he got the fish from hawaii. I immediately questioned how he got a shipment from hawaii and he gave me some line about getting them from a private diver and that it was legal I'm not aware of any permits to collect and can't find new information so I wanted to ask everyone if they have heard of anyone being allowed to collect and ship fish out of hawaii. Other thoughts, information and sources are greatly appreciated.

Are you referring to the ban on collecting fish in Hawaii? To my knowledge the ban was partially lifted last year in certain areas and that more strict measures on who was issued permits was part of the decision. On a side note, I know that my Yellow Tang that I got last summer was part of the first batch that was released after the complete ban was lifted.

They aren't giving out new permits, but those that have them can still collect in Hawaii.

There are stipulations on the size of netting that can be used as well.

It is quite legal to still get fish from Hawaii.
