This was already considered the ideal model of a sustainable fishery. If catching fish from the ocean bothers you, you're in the wrong hobby lol! Maybe I misunderstood your post?

The reality is that this is idealogically motivated and will do little to protect any fish not endemic to Hawaii. Collection will be driven to places with less sustainable collection methods that have little to no oversight. Commercial food fishing is much more harmful to fish populations but this is about fish not being put in cages and nothing more. Outside of Australia, Hawaii had the best managed ornamental fishery in the world that could have well been an example for other parts of the world. The lies spread by the people behind the push to ban ornamental collecting are spread by many news outlets but studies have been done showing that the management currently in place is working and fish populations have improved but this inconvenient truth is rarely mentioned at best and intentionally left out at worst.

There is nothing to be learned from this. This is about ideology and anthropomorphism.

Hopefully it will convince normal folks that this group of people aren't about the resource but about their own ideology. From that standpoint there may ultimately be some good come from it.

Opponents including Earthjustice lawyer Summer Kupau-Odo have been challenging the state's permit system, claiming that the impact to Hawaii's reefs has never been properly studied.

"DLNR has a duty to protect these resources for us today and for future generations," Kupau-Odo said. "All of the existing permits are illegal, collection under them is illegal and no one should be out collecting for commercial profits. No one should be out taking our reef resources for sale elsewhere to make a private profit."

She is more interested in keeping people from making money off "her" reef than anything to do with ecology.

Fish collection hasn’t stopped, the license is only for the method used to catch fish. Going forward no netting smaller than 3” is allowed for commercial ornamental harvest.

Jamie, can you expound upon that? It sure seemed like from the wording in the new ruling from Friday that all licenses had been declared illegal and invalid?

I can't imagine how you can catch a wrasse or moderate size Potter's angel with a net size of 3" . Larger tangs, butterfly fish yes but not those?

The only thing I've seen that is still allowed is the recreational catching of aquarium fish.

I got my info from the collectors in Hawaii earlier today, but anyone can look it up. The aquarium permit is the license in question. From what I was told prices aren’t even going up yet so any retailer that does at this point is price gouging or using fear tactics to scare people into buying now at artificially inflated prices. Where I work we sell yellow Tangs for $30 across the street they’re $80 go figure. Leave it to the media and some resellers to sensationalize the issue.

Having gone through something similar but not the same thing here in SoCal called MLPA's, the scientific studies will never be done( no funding, etc..) most likely this will be the norm for a long time if not forever. It's really probably kinda related to the same thing we now deal with in the form of MLPA's, closure of entire areas for fishing, not even catch and release, no funding available for the studies that where supposed to take place to see if the MLPA's are working. Basically it's just a cover for treehuggers backed by big $ to shut down in our case fishing or collecting of fish in these zones because the people behind it ( tree huggers) want the ocean to be untouched by humans in any manner. I'm willing to bet this will never change just like are issues here in socal. It will most likely never be reopened only get worse. They use a bunch of flawed and made up science ( backed by big money) to back up there claims for shutting off access to the ocean. Attending meetings and such to voice opinions is a waste of time. Once they shut it down it's probably done for good, sorry to say it's the world we live in here in the USA.
