Head shaking flav

Hello,

My flaversens fish has stop eaten since a few days. It stay in a corner, ventilating. he shake his head nervously from right to left from time to time. It seems but i am not sure , that it mouth seems partially open all the time. All the other fissh are going well, I see no visible problem on his skin.

My first thinking was he has eaten something wrong that is stuck in its mouth or it has a broken mouth. Any suggestion to help him??

A video of at least 30 seconds under white lighting will be very helpful. Two things that come to mind is jaw maybe but also flukes. With flukes you will see rapid breathing, fish acting lethargic or swimming near the water surface, hiding in the corner of tank or behind rocks, loss of appetite, shaking its head, flashing/darting, develop clamped fins, , or scratching against objects. They may also exhibit what looks like yawning from gill irritation develop, cloudy eyes and loss of color.

That does look like it has gill flukes. the fish is breathing too fast, it is shaking its head and is also "flashing" (scratching).

Can you get praziquantel in Europe? Prazipro is one brand. If not, can you move all fish in the tank to another one and run a hyposalinity (low salt level) treatment?

In the Netherlands, there is/was a product called Dactymor that is praziquantel. eSHa gdex is also praziquantel.

thank you for you input. In switzerland it seems very difficult to find any products to treat the fish... I can try an hyposalinity but as I read in your guide, it takes about 35 days to cure and I am leaving soon in Holidays... crap

Do you think introducing a bunch of lysmata amboiensis can make the job?

Only treatment I found in shop is Sera mycopur, can it works ?

No, Sera Mycopur is sold as an anti-fungal agent, so would not be expected to help with flukes. It contains copper and acriflavine, neither of which are used to control flukes.

Can you get Sera Tremazol? That also has praziquantel in it.

Lysmata shrimp have been reported to feed on Neobenedenia eggs to a fairly high degree. However, if this is gill flukes, that is a different species, some of which can be live bearers, and Lysmata will not control those in small fish (larger fish, that can posture in front of the shrimp and open their gill covers *might* see some control).

I am stilll trying to cure my flav. Before my holydays, i got the time to make an Hyposallinity cure, but only for about 7 days. This was successful and I have turn back the flav in the tank. He was eating again and doing great. Unfortunately, after 10 days when i came back he starting again to lose apetite and shaking.

I finallly be able to get some Sera Tremazol, in Switzerland such treatment can be sold only by veterinary, which cost me a lot!

So I placed again the Flav in the QT and gives it the Tremazol treatment, which works well. After 7 days I did it again. After 8 hours since I put the last dose of Tremazol, I did a total water change, washed the QT the replacing the Flav in the QT. The flav was great again, eating.

This is about 8 days I did that and it starting again to lose appetite, ventillating and scratching a bit.

I am a bit lost, and it seems that every 7 days or so, it start again the symptoms.

Any advice what to do ?

i plan the make again a Tremazol treatment but I am affraid it will be not successful...

Hyposalinity needs to be done for 30 days. Fluke eggs can live for some time and then hatch out, that is what happened to your fish.

The same thing can happen with single fluke treatments, about a week after they are done, new eggs hatch out. In some cases, it can take three treatments, 8 days apart, to break the life cycle.
