So most info I can find regarding how nitrate impacts fish is in freshwater. Does anyone know of any info on how nitrate impacts the health of marine fish?

From what research i've read on effects elevated N03 in marine environments is based on aquacultured fish for food. I've not read any research papers on effects with invertebrates or coral. Not to say there isn't any, I've just not looked for them.

From what i've read, toxicity of elevated N03 is largely dependent on salinity. Elevated SG beyond NSW.

From what i can gather from reading is the research has been done on larger fish for the food aquaculture trade and typically larger species of fish can, in general be more resilient as opposed to the ornamental fish that we keep in the hobby.

With that said, fish kept in these enclosed systems can be safely kept in N03 levels as high as 100 to 200+ mg/l of N03.

Lethal levels get as high a 1000+ mg/l.

For conversion sake: 1 mg/l = 1ppm. (not an exact conversion exactly, but for us, close enough)

I personally have N03 levels consistently around 40+ppm in my system with no ill effects to fish, inverts, micro fauna and coral.

Hope this helps!
