Short and sweet one today. Are fully open corals (especially euphillias) a sign of a healthy tank? I'm not talking peramiters just if u where to look at a tank could u determine how healthy it was by coralline growth etc?

All my perams are perfect I'm just curious

I would say it's definitely a good sign and mainly in conjunction with solid test parameters.

ICP test is always the best way to confirm a healthy and balanced water chemistry.

Thanks! It was just something that came into my head as I was watching my tank lol.do u have gsp by anychance?

Excellent question. This is an important part of reef tank keeping. Use you eyes and testing together. Don't trust either to be the sole indicator.

Your tank will tell you when something isn't right and testing will help you know that that is. On the other hand both are capable of missing hidden issues that lie in the waiting to cause havoc.

I've seen a lot of people on here use the "If my coral looks happy, I'm happy" mantra, and for the most part I think it's true. I certainly wouldn't try to change anything if everything looks good.

But... anticipate what happy, healthy coral means. I have a massive (for my system) toadstool leather I got about a month and a half ago, and while it has been doing pretty well, over the last few weeks I've seen it steadily show further polyp extension and expand another 30% or so over its previous size.

In perfect harmony with this, my nitrate levels have threatened to bottom out, going from 5-7 ppm to around .5 ppm, and I've had to start dosing nitrate to keep everyone happy.

Yeah, toadstools are awesome. I can't seem to find any where I live though. My tanks looking and testing good. As you said if the corals happy I'm happy :)
