Hey guys i just wanted your opinion on this frag i bought i had it for about 3weeks now i also bought some other zoas (bought at the sametime) that have now fully opened up and have stayed opened but this frag seems like its not consistently staying open what do you guys think i also notice like little hairs sticking out of them that my other zoas dont have
I also did not dip them

The hairs could be a variety of algae, a potential issue(GHA or Bryopsis). Bigger concern would be the unzipped Zoa. Please please always from here forward dip (I like Bayer method). I did the same and it took a long road with a lot of loss to recover. Their current health looks pretty good overall.

Zoas tend to have the most stuff come off in my dips. They are a magnet. I’ve even freshwater dipped them when I had no dip. They close up out of water and they didn’t get bothered by it. No recommending a FW dip but that’s how extreme of a measure I’ll take before introducing zoas into my tank. At least take it out and use tweezers to manually remove anything you see on it.

The algae looks like red turf algae along the sides which is not easy to control if it takes hold. Trust me, I had a really bad case but one day it died when I broke my big tank down to a smaller temporary tank with different lighting. There are not many things that eat it and it grows quick and spreads fast. Not something easily removed manually either. Its very strong.

I would suggest soaking the frag in diluted hydrogen peroxide which will kill the algae but shouldn't affect the zoas unless they are really sickly. I typically use 1 part peroxide and 3 parts tank water for about 5 mins. the algae will turn bright orange in a day and then white then will die.

The zoas don't look too bad, but I am not a zoa expert. they are pretty flat to the rock suggesting there was/ or is plenty of light.

What's your water parameters look like? what kind of lighting and at what intensity?
