Hi everyone , whats the average price you spend on a aquarium cooler.
You have probably seen that global warming is striking and giving us the hottest summer on record here in the U K. Its been up near the 100 F mark for quiet a few days now. Ive been keeping marines for many many years 48 to be exact and have never had a problem with water being over temp. but now ,even with fans blowing ice packs at the tank and putting cool things in the water i cant get the temp down below 85 and sometimes nearer to 90 F.
my corals are all bleaching and i think will be dead by the end of this week apart from good old xenia, thats still going strong, so i started thinking about maybe getting a tank cooler, but was stunned by the price of the ones that had a built in thermostat, We do get ripped off with equipment prices over here , but the ones i could see were around the $5000 mark or £ 4500 sterling.
that is CRAZY money, its cheaper to let the tank die and then restock when the summer has gone

My A/C broke this past month and I had no idea how much it truly helped at keeping my tank water cold. I've had to resort to Ice packs and a small fan in the refugium to bring down the water temperatures due to a tight budget. But I can tell you, I saw tons of chillers for less than $500! Granted I only have a 125g...not sure about the size of your system. But I am absolutely positive sure you can find better deals if you look more...$5000 is what you pay to buy a car, not an aquarium chiller. Good luck!

Ouch!... if u r handy, I wonder if u can buy a small beverage fridge or tiny freezer and drill small holes on 2 sides (entry & exit) and run your tank water through it via tubing (u can leave a large coil of tubing inside the fridge/freezer so more of water volume will cool) to help cool the water? using a valve on the tubing will help control flow thru the fridge, i.e. let the water sit inside longer or shorter. This assuming a small fridge/freezer is much cheaper than a chiller and would take up more space but beats $5K!

I believe DIY Joey did a Youtube video on this using a garden hose!(I think...)

my whole setup is in Oklahoma garage where temps reach 120-140F easily during summer. for that reason i invested in the largest hobbist chiller i could find, i got ecoplus 1.5hp commercial grade chiller. it keeps my 300g right at 79.3-79.5 range.
i paid $1200 for it brand new several years back.

Take 3-4 Large zip lock bags. Fill with water and freeze them. Float one to bring down temp. When bag melts, place back in freezer, and pull another and float that one. You get the idea. Brings down temp safely and gradually and the method works. I have a chiller and ultimately- its the best remedy

If possible id freeze them with seawater in case a bag rips.

I use a home brew wort cooler with a water keg. Put the wort cooler in the keg, fill with ice. Pump tank water through wort cooler returning to sump using my apex to control pump on/off.

I only use this during hurricane season durin extended power outages where my AC is not functioning.

As to the use of frozen water, the best heat transfer happens if you simply make a big ice cube and drop it in. Use RODI water the is approximately equal to top off volume.
Plan B: Get an old car radiator with a decent fan then install a heat exchange unit in your sump. A small circulating pump and voila ... you have a cooling system. It can kick on automatically when the temp goes up.

Maybe I’m missing something but my house temp is 68, and it was 104 here in Boise today. My water temp is right at 78. So how is this water so hot if the air around it is cool, unless your home has no ac, then I can see that. But even then depending on the size, as some have stated freeze baggies of rodi water and drop them in. Problem is what happens when your at work or not home to drop one in?

The cheapest solution is to research peltier cooling, many botanists (try contacting some who rear the plants of the genus Nepenthes) use it as some tropical plants require a nightime temperature drop of up to 20 degrees. I built one a few years ago, its not terribly difficult and you can buy most of it as one peice, just have to connect thermostat and switch. It'll basically be a small fan pushing out supercold air (or whatever temp you want).
