I accidently turned on the heater will working on Aquascaping and started smoking. Some of the paint (or whatever it is) started melting. Is it ruined? Scared to turn it on in the water and get electrocuted. I am an idiot :)

Any advice?

Personally, I would replace it. At least it would give you some peace.

Look at it like this, the heater is one of the biggest reasons for a tank crash or electric shock under normal circumstances, I replace mine every year.

I am about to put the water back in my tank. Can I wait till tomorrow to get new heater. I have. no fish. I just put live sand and some Caribsea Life Rock that is live. Water temp is about 74.

My first shot at Aquascaping. Not easy

Especially considering nothing is really in the tank, you're more than fine running it without one for a day. That's actually ideal.

One other piece of advice, get a heater controller.

I agree with above, you will be fine. As long as the water is above 50 degrees or so, the bacteria isn't affected.
