So after I finished my water change I noticed my heater broke open and it smelled like an acrid burning smell. (Side note: my plug to my pump got wet and sparked when I plugged it in and so I didn’t smell this.) The water was mixed in a 65 gal brute can with wheels and a lid and has been mixing and heating up for two days. Anyway, I look at the heater after the water change and notice the guys laying out of it at the bottom of the can. I am assuming the pump hit it and broke the top of it and made it come apart. Regardless, my corals look ticked. Could just be from the water change. My fish are swimming fine and acting normally. The water change itself was about 35 gal. I did a 5 gal on my qt tank and was about to do another 5 gal water change on my bio cube when I noticed this. So there was some left in the bottom that I just dumped out. Now for the questions. Anything I need to worry about on either of the tanks that had that water put in? I am running carbon already and GFO along with my protein skimmer. Second question, is my water changing can okay to still use? I rinsed it out with RO water, but not sure if any chemicals would soak into the plastic. Thanks all for the help!

Run carbon and do a large water change just in case. Your water change can should be ok, I would rinse it really well. Can drop some carbon in the can as well just in case any residue remains after rinsing.

One question to ask: WHY did the heater break. This usually happens when the water you are adding is much colder than the water in the tank.

Happened to me once...

Didn't get the temp for the new water close enough. Once the colder water hit the glass of the heater... POP!

Having to make more water and will be a two days to make. Slow RODI and have to heat it up/mix the salt. Carbon is in and running. I will try to drop some in the container once it gets full or water too. Just put it in a bag or do I have to pump it through a reactor?
The heater broke from a pump spinning around in there or being dropped on it. It’s a large return pump that I no longer need as a return that I use to mix the salt with. That’s my beat guess at what happened anyway. It was very cold water, but the heater wasn’t hot and then dropped in.

Now my Montis have lost their color/turned purple go include my beach bum and crazy T! Does this mean death or will the colors come back? Trying to make water, but how much do a water change should I do?
