This failed out of the box... Hydor 150W.

Hopefully you caught before it went in your system!

I did. I just got two 150W heaters for a 58 gallon I'll be setting up shortly. I took one out of the box to prep some mixed saltwater to put in my nano. Only when I touched the bucket it was noticeably warmer water than my other tank (which I just had my hands in).

I have had bad luck with the hydor. Lost my whole sps system due to one. Ever since I run them on a controller apex or reefkeeper. Very good investment

Did you stir the water before you used that thermometer. It will read just the temp on top of the water. I'm sure you know heat rises, but I did that once with out stirring the water and in the tank, the tank lost ten degrees.

Dang! Time to take it back. I've had great luck with the aqueon pro series heaters. I run three on the system with a ranco controller. Reminds me I should replace them soon, been running now for six years straight.

There is a pump inside the bucket. I was mixing salt in there. Prepping for a water change.

You checked the manual on how to set it? Its kinda odd and takes time. basicly set, test, adjust, repeat

In one hand I read the manual and in the other I cooked the bacon.

With that being said. There is nothing that says I need to calibrate it. It shouldn't be off 10F.
I did see something about water volume. They made it really confusing (would be nice to have a formula..). But maybe the heater was running the heat too high because it is not meant for the 5 gallon bucket so it could be anticipating higher temps or something. But..... what I find weird about that would be when I turned the temp down to like 74 the heater light came on (the water was 89F). So that doesn't make much sense. I could always test it on my 30 gallons freshwater tank.
