I am setting up a 120 in my basement and wondering what type and size of heater everyone recommends. I do not have a controller and it will be a mixed reef tank. Thanks for the help.

A lot of folks, including myself, would recommend utilizing two smaller heaters instead of one large enough to handle it in it's own. In doing so, if/when one should fail (invariably in the on position) it is less likely to cook the tank. On the other hand, if one goes out, the other will keep it at least somewhat heated instead of no heat at all. That my $.02 anyway.

I’ve always loved and had good luck with the Cobalt Neotherm heaters. One of the only ones I’ve had heat accurately without a controller and I honestly really trust them. Like said above I’d use two smaller ones, probably a set of 100-150W heaters depending on your ambient room temp. That being said, I still recommend a controller because any heater can and very likely eventually will fail.

I like the Finnex 300 watt titanium heaters they come in the orange box, I wish they made some smaller ones.
