This is the second time this has happened to me with an aqueon preset heater in my qt tank. It gets a whitish glaze on it which is now flaking off and going all over the place. Any idea if this is harmful? It’s still working.

Are you dosing anything? Looks like some kind of precipitation building up?

That was my first thought, but I don’t dose anything. I do use Red Sea coral pro salt in this tank, but the same thing happened in my fish qt which I use instant ocean in.

I use the same heater for my QT tanks and have never seen that. I also do not dose these tanks. I use Fritz salt for reference.

I wonder if the heater has a broken seal and that is the result of stray electricity?

maybe, I don’t have a voltage meter but it’s possible. It’s just frustrating that this is the second time I’ve had this problem with these heaters, I thought the first was just a fluke. If it was precipitation it would be on more surfaces than just the heater.

I use two in rotation as I use the TTM method for my ich QT. Neither have ever had this issue. Are the flakes a hard substance or soft?

They’re soft and break apart when I try to pick them up.

I would contact the manufacturer and see what they say. I would also consider pulling it out of the tank until you know what the issue is.

Will do, I have a 2 different heaters coming tomorrow to replace these.
