I just got out of bed and my tank was 90 degrees! How anything is still alive I don't know. I cut the fans on and when I checked the sump, the heater was running full blast. I had it set on 72 degrees and it was still hot as crap. It's an All Glass brand heater and it's only six months. I'm guessing I need a new heater. I unplugged it a minute ago. Have any of you guys seen this happen before?

Sometimes a heater's thermostat goes bad and it stays on. That is a common issue with some heaters. That is why some people have those electronic systems that run heating and coolong, because if the temp gets to X degrees, the power is shut off for the heater, so even if the thermostat is stuck it cannot continue to heat with the power shut off. You would still want a working heater even with one of those systems.
Time to buy another heater. (

I have had that happen to me as well as a glass heater busting in the tank. It killed lots of coral. Now I have my heater ran through a reef keeper 2 and if it gets to a certain degrees the controller cuts it off.

ya, not uncommon dude, I also had it happen and have it controlled with a reefkeeper elite, but any good controller or just a good quality heater will work. I have had good success with visitherm heaters and ebo jagers, but even they will do it after several years of use

That's too bad...don't try and cool things off too fast...could be worst than letting it cool off naturally with the fans in place. I hope everything makes it ok...

Had to throw the "elite" in huh Bryan??? :sure:

Hope everything in okay as 90 is quite warm.

Using a controller on your heaters is a good idea ... speaking of that I need to get one more controller myself.

I know your heater 6 months, but I also replace all my heaters once a year since they are one of the cheaper items in our tanks that can make or break it! Also, be sure to purchase a good quality heater ... I personally like Ebo-Jager or Finnex.

Tank is back down to 81 degrees now. Everything looks fine. Thank God I caught it when I did or else I'd of lost a lot of money! Thanks for the input guys I appreciate it.
