I built my 180g/220g total system volume in my basement and found I needed about 5 Watts per gallon to hold 78F water temperature. I initially grossly underestimated the wattage I needed so I have a mix of 4 smaller heaters to make up my 1100W of heat I needed. At some point I’ll get two bigger heaters so I can free up some plugs and sump space. I found that the biggest challenge is what you can actually fit into your system. These big heaters can get LONG. I’m usually an Eheim guy but their heaters, appropriately sized are around 20 inches long! Try to find a spot to put that in a sump and keep submerged.
I use the Fluval E-Series 200watt (you would need 2-300watt).
This one did stand out for me for the following reasons.
-fully submersible
-inside a plastic cage
-digit
-digit display, current temp, set temp
-three colour display, red, (3 degrees over normal) green, (on-point), blue, (3 degrees below normal)
-automatic was shutoff
-shuts off if comes out of the water
Combined with an inkbird temp controller, has a number of redundancies.
