Hey everyone hope someone can help me out i just have a quick question about heaters and chillers.
ive seen tons of systems with both running so my question is...do you set the heater to a certain temp to keep the chiller from turning off?

I have a chiller that works as a heater. I live in south florida however so I never need the heating part but if the temperature in my tank were to drop to 73 when set at 75 then the heater would turn on. Hope that helps

What kind of chiller is that? I'm also in south Florida the thing is I have an hqi biocube so the temperature changes when the lights go out, so I figured if I leave the heater on at a certain temperature the chiller will stay on to keep it like a degree lower so it will always be at the same temp? Does that make sense?

I have a Teco chiller - with heater. The temperature you set on the unit itself controls both, you don't set the heater independently - you set the degree range you want and it automatically does the rest.

I have a 29 gallon nano and it was set up with an hqi but I transferred to LEDs. I still have the chiller though since its so hot down here and I dont want to take any chances. Its an oceanic. I think it was like 450 $ but it can run up to a 55 gallon tank so this way its not running a lot and will last awhile. Heres a pic

And all you have to do is set it to whatever temp you want if it goes high enough above the chiller kicks in. Or low enough then the heater kicks in. But like I said the heater part has never turned on lol

ohh so the oceanic also has the heater in it? i think i was actually about to purchase that same one! so that means when the lights go out and if the temp drops the heater will kick in?

im an idiot you just answered that question! thanks so much!

Haha dont say that! And yeah when the lights go off if the temp drops enough it will kick in but like I sad before, I have had the tank for close to 4 years and its never kicked on but its always good to have just in case its gets in the high 20s even though that happenes like once every 15 years lol

lol true true, i was actually looking at the jbj arctica not the oceanic because they are having a sale at marineandreef.com but im not sure if it has the heating capabilities?

Little bigger than yours ....lol... it was running on a 180, now a 300. Like Mr. E Wrasse says though ..... here in florida the heater rarely kicks on. Being in Central Florida, however, I have had it kick on a few times - we tend to get a few colder nights than they do down south.

DO NOT GET JBJ CHILLERS!!! My tank is a jbj and came with this crappy jbj chiller. Needless to say it lasted a year and the thermostat broke sending my tank into a downward spiral. Woke up the next morning and my water temp was 52 degrees. I called them many many times and they finally answered and sent a part. It was the wrong part. Turns out they didnt make that part anymore so I just pretty much said screw them and got an oceanic which was reccomended to me by several LFSs and aquarists

thanks so much for that okay so for your chiller what return pumps and stuff are you using all the things i were going to get were jbj products
i actually hate jbj got my first tank from them...worst investment ever, i was hoping the chiller would redeem them....guess not.

if you could give me a list of what youre using that would be great!!!!!

also where did you buy your oceanic from?

I bought my oceanic through my LFS in jensen beach, FL. And I have the same pum that came with the tank pumping the water into my chiller then the cold water tube goes up and connects to one of my outflows. Pretty simple set up!

I'm sorry if this was already explained, I may have missed it. Unless your oceanic is different than mine, you still have to buy a heater. It's not actually included, there is just a power port on the side that is turned on when the temp drops. So yes it does have heating capabilities, just not built in. Sorry for wasting your time if you knew this, it just sounded like it was perceived as being built in, and I wanted to make sure you knew it wasn't. Awesome chiller though, I own two different sizes of this chiller.

Nope didn't know that! Thanks! Does it have to be an oceanic chiller or can it be any kind?
