So I'm setting up a 180 gallon display with a 55 gallon sump and was wondering how many 300w heaters I should have in it. I currently have 4 300w heaters to work with. I also have them on a controller, I was thinking setting up 2 to turn on at 79 F and turn off at 79.5 and have a third that will only turn on if the temp drops to 78 and turn off at 79 basically for backup. What do you guys think?
Thanks

Subtracting rocks and equipment, perhaps around 210 gallons water?
Standard rule is 3 watts per gallon. So 2 300 watt heaters operating in tandem should be ok.
Unless your home is unusually cold, that should do the job.

The tank is in the basement so it does tend to stay around 65-67 down here.

In that case, since you have another one, might want to run 3 in tandem with 1 backup.
