Heaters for 800g+

What heaters are you all using on your systems? I have 1200w worth of heaters but they run nearly non stop. I am revamping my system and am looking for efficiency and quality ( no stray voltage from poor quality Chinese made heaters)

I use few Eheim JEager 3x300W Eheim Jeager and 1 300 and 2x600 W titanium heaters. they are split on 2 channels so I can turn one set off if its too cold and they run non stop for too long or if I'm on back up generator so only run one channel at a time. my Dt is 400 but my total system volume is 800+ and most of it is in an non heated basement where I need to turn on the vents for some time to avoid condensation and mold. last couple of years I'm using a dehumidifier to help with condesnation so I have to turn the vents less and I minimize heat loss.

There are also a few others on R2R that run similar radiant heating systems with different forms of heat exchangers. I decided against electric heating in part due to the reliability of electric aquarium heaters.

Pex loop on my hot water heater here too, there is no cheaper alternative IMO

The bigger chillers can be heat pumps. That would be the way to go i'd imagine.

My house doesn't get that cold, so on my 800, I use 3x finnex 300w heaters. I will probably upgrade to 500's as I replace due to fear of heater failure over time.

I’m upgrading to a 150 from a 75. I know it’s not the same as an 800 but I’ve got to say, Finnex all the way. I’ve been using them with no issues for over 1.5 years. The other idea I had that helped me keep stable temps consistent was to place my current 2 in different chambers of sump. They are run through my apex.

I have read that aquarium heaters are essentially 100% efficient. If so, watts are watts, and it shouldn’t matter how you get there. I toyed with doing a loop off my water heater, but since it’s an electric unit, I figured there’d be no savings. I don’t frankly worry about physical breakage - had plenty of heaters stop working, but none actually break. If I was dealing with truly huge water volumes, I’d probably add a zone to my house heating (oil fired boiler). There have been occasional threads on how to do this.

The other thing I have noticed is that 1” acrylic on the current 450 is a far better insulator than 1/2” glass on the prior 265, and both require about the same total wattage. Plus bigger tanks have a lower surface to volume ratio which also helps.

Thank you for the link. Simon, I have 3 heaters ranging from 300w to 500w but the issue is they run all the time, but can easily hold the tank at 76 degrees where I keep my tank. Without any heaters the tank is 70.5 degrees and with just my UV running the tank is at 72 so I’m looking to raise the temp 4-5 degrees. Really just looking for something more cost savings via the gas water heater.

My heaters have never come on since i started my system 3yrs ago. I have 2 x 500w Schego heaters but they are just ornaments, i should remove them at some point i guess.

System is currently 25.10 - 26.00º over a 24hr window

You guys must live in darn cold houses..... here we heat ours as it makes living in them more comfortable

Would go with 2 or 3 of these, hooked up to controller. Good to have extra wattage and redundancy with heater. If one heater is enough get two. If two is enough get three. If used in acrylic make sure secured and not in contact with acrylic.

I made the decision a long time ago to heat the house, and just supplement with heaters as needed. Here natural gas is a lot less expensive than electricity so I can keep my house at a cozy 75 with tanks from 74 to 80 a lot cheaper than keeping the house at 65 and needing a heater in every tank. Of course I also have somewhere around 4k gallons in the house and 21ish tanks. As an added bonus running the heater more helps to reduce humidity in the winter which is a much bigger problem than heating.

Lol I heat my house believe me but in Ohio in the winter it gets cold plus the entire setup DT and sump are in the basement so it’s always 70 degrees whether it’s winter or summer. Heating the tank is a must all year long

I used to run MH's. Was constantly running fans and whatnot to desperately try to keep the heat down. (Arizona). Eventually I swapped to LED just for the heat. Immediately I noticed the heaters started running alot more. (as opposed to they never turned on ever)

Same (ok, probably less) power usage.. less fans I guess. It's also easier to heat than cool IMHO, so, I'll take this over that.

Just swap to 400W metal halides. Your heat problems will instantly disappear.

I have a 2500 watt Process Technology that is set up 220v if your interested in it, I'd let it go cheap compared to its value. I will never ever use it again. My set up has changed over the years and is no longer used. Let me know if you are interested.
