Hello fellow reefers,

I am currently running an old Eheim Jager heater in my tank, I got it used when I got the tank and I have been using it for about a year. I do run an Apex Classic on my tank to monitor the heater and help protect my tank. Lately my tank has been running a little cooler than usual, usually run about 78 currently for the past week about 76, so I am thinking about replacing it and am open to suggestions. Looking for the best bang for the buck and do not mind using the Apex to control it

Eheim Jager heater is about as good as you can get:) What size heater do you have now, and what size is your system. Other question would be, where do you live? The reason for where do you live is sometime we run our house cold in the cold months and the heater will not keep up with a large water volume.

Current system is a 150 gal total system, 120 gal display with 30 gal sump. I live in Pennsylvania. I believe its a 300 watt heater (i might be wrong on that, but im pretty sure its a 300 watt)

I agree with @jsker .....Eheim Jager is the best glass heater having glass twice as thick as other heaters. The only issue with Jagers is that they are long.

My recommendation, two 150 or 200 watt Jagers controller by your Apex (or some other temperature controller.) Use that 300 to heat up your new saltwater when doing water changes.

Hey thank you for the extra information. I have 80 gal water volume and my 300w Finnex was having trouble keeping up with my system in the winter. I do not run the household heat unless I have too:rolleyes:, I like it cold. Down here in Florida we do not get to many cold days;Joyful I switch to a 500W and my system now keeps up. The heat does click on until the house drops down to 62 degrees, but no higher:D. As @redfishbluefish and I agree two is better than one if you have the room in the sump. I would suggest two 300w for the size of your sump. The 500w fits in my 15 wide sump, anything larger I can not fit in my sump. If is get cold this year I might add back the 300w and that would give me 800W for 80 gal water volume which I ran last year.

I like my Finnex heaters, but one thing I learned is with the Apex, if the chamber is dry the heater will still heat and burn up and this might happen with the other heaters also.
